From the Acting Principal

Parents,

It has been with pleasure that in Wendy’s absence on Long Service Leave I have stepped into her role as Acting Principal for this period. As an administration team this is an important time of the year, as we are working in two phases : celebrating and culminating a year of learning and relationships and working to plan and consolidate a number of key aspects for 2016.

This week some staff at Holy Cross will again be undertaking EBA Protected Actions, along with other educators from across the state. This action will occur on Thursday 5th November between 8:30 am and 10:30 am. As previously organised, arrangements will be in place to ensure a modified program during this time, so that there is as little disruption to families as possible, whilst maintaining appropriate duty of care requirements for all staff and students. See the link below for more information.

BEAT CANCER TOUR WRISTBANDS FOR SALE THIS WEEK FROM YOUR CLASS TEACHER $2.00. Please help support Cahn Butler-Channell a former student leader at Holy Cross and current Year 12 students at St Augustine’s College. Cahn will be riding in THE BEAT CANCER TEAM at the SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER in January 2016 raising funds for the Cancer Council. Cahn spoke at assembly last Friday and asked the kids if they would support him by buying a wristband during Week 5, this week. Wristbands are $2.00 and have #curecancerwithcahn on them. The students have permission to wear them all this week. See our Community Notices section for Cahn’s story.

We wish Cahn well on his adventures and what will be a valuable personal experience for him.

2016 Bump-Up-Day arrangements are currently being organised for current students of Holy Cross. Bump-Up-Day will occur on Thursday 12th November. All Year 6 students attending St Andrew’s College, St Monica’s College or St Augustine’s College will be in attendance at their respective 2016 schools on this day. Arrangements from these College’s should have been forwarded to you. Students attending any other Secondary School, including Smithfield State High will attend Holy Cross as normal. Bump-Up-Day on Thursday 12th November, will occur for all other year levels from 1:30pm-2:50pm. During this time students will remain in their current class groupings but will ‘Bump-Up’ to the next year level and teaching team. Please be aware that current classes are still being arranged and 2016 teacher allocations have not yet been made therefore the teacher your child visits for ‘Bump-Up-Day’ will not necessarily be their 2016 teacher or class. Our 2016 Prep students were last week sent invitations to attend an afternoon session or evening session of ‘Bump-Up’.

We have less than two weeks now until the annual Holy Cross Christmas Fair on Saturday 14th November. The P & F are working hard with a band of helpers to once again ensure a successful and memorable Fair. The annual Christmas Fair is the major project of the P & F and their major fundraiser for the year. I have heard many great stories from students, staff and broader community members and can’t wait to experience my first Fair.

This Friday 6th November, students are permitted to attend school in free dress and contribute a chocolate for our Choc Lotto Stall and a bottle for our Fair’s Bottle Stall (we appreciate wine, soft drink, cordial, jam, shower gel, any unused and unopened and “in date” item is gratefully received). Collection will occur at all school entry points. Please ensure that students are dressed practically for a school day with sun safe attire, closed in shoes and no clothing with inappropriate slogans.

This week we have reminded students that school arrival time is from 8.10am when supervision commences. Any students who are arriving well before this time should be booked into before school care.

Last week staffing arrangements for 2016 were confirmed. It is with pleasure we congratulate Ms Dee Cois who becomes a permanent continuing teacher at Holy Cross. She has completed a number of contract positions with us over the past couple of years. Dee’s extensive experience and personable approach she brings will be an invaluable addition to the Holy Cross staff. During our staffing process we were fortunate to grant permanent continuing status in a number of other positions that have traditionally been contracts. These positions are for Ms Jo Neil, Curriculum Support Teacher, Mrs Christina Wight Part Time Continuing Arts Teacher and Mrs Sam Weterkamp Part Time Continuing Languages Teacher. Each of these teachers bring a passion for their chosen specialty area that will continue to enhance the curriculum aspect of their position and the engagement of students in learning. We have fewer contract positions available for 2016 on our growing staff but we will be blessed to retain Mr David Gunter, Mrs Aleisha Russell, Mrs Marissa Savaglio and Miss Jo Van Ewyk who have all accepted positions at Holy Cross for 2016. Each brings their own interests and strengths to once again enhance the overall talents of the Holy Cross staff. We will welcome back from leave Mrs Gina Robb, Mrs Carol Kelly, Ms Kate Daysh and Ms Sarah Green. Mrs Michelle Jack and Mrs Susan Harpley have both made the decision to remain on leave from Holy Cross in 2016.

Sadly we will farewell some members of Holy Cross at the end of 2015. Ms Ashleigh McQuillan who has been on contract for one year has accepted a position at St Andrew’s College. Ashleigh has developed a strong rapport with the teachers and students in Year 5 and will be a great addition to the St Andrew’s staff. Miss Jess Nelson will be departing after three years at Holy Cross to travel through Europe and begin the next stage of her teaching career. Jess has bought great exuberance to her classroom and to Holy Cross and will be missed by students and staff. Mrs Paulette Henderson-Crofts will also be departing as Holy Cross PE Teacher after 4 years of dedication and commitment. She will be relocating with her family to Ipswich, Brisbane. Mrs Henderson will leave behind a strong and thriving PE and sports program. Further announcements will come in the next few weeks as we continue to work through the process of appointing her replacement.

As mentioned above Mrs Sam Weterkamp will be the Holy Cross Languages teacher in 2016. We are excited that we will be transitioning to French as our language in 2016. The language area is a difficult area to staff with quality teachers hard to come by. Throughout this year many parents have expressed their desire for a languages teacher at Holy Cross. We are confident that Mrs Weterkamp’s passion and love for language teaching and in particular, French will be an exciting addition to the Holy Cross curriculum for years to come.

Please see the below announcement regarding the school starting date for 2016. Please note this will also affect the staggered start date for our Preps that was sent out via email last week. Further information about changes to the 2016 Prep start-up will be discussed at the Prep Orientation Sessions to be held next Thursday 12th November and will also be forwarded via email once arrangements are finalised.

Catholic schools to follow suit on pupil free day

Catholic school children will have a pupil free day on Monday, January 25 after Education Minister Kate Jones declared that state schools would start next year on Wednesday, January 27, after the Australia Day public holiday on January 26.

Catholic Education Services Executive Director, Bill Dixon said as some parents had students in both education systems and to avoid complications with the school bus transport system, it made sense for Catholic schools to fall into line with the state system and also declare a pupil free day.

“I am sure many families will be grateful for the extended summer break,” he said.

The pupil free day on January 25 will be a once-off additional pupil free day for the year.

All Saints Day

Matthew 5: 1 – 12

When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up to the mountainside. After he sat down, his disciples gathered around him, and he began to teach them.
Blessed are the poor in spirit; the reign of God belongs to them.
Blessed are the sorrowing; they shall be consoled.
Blessed are the meek; they shall inherit the earth.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for holiness; they shall have their fill.
Blessed are they who show mercy; mercy shall be theirs.
Blessed are the pure of heart; they shall see God.
Blessed, too, the peacemakers; they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted for the sake of holiness; the reign of God is theirs.
Blessed are you when people insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of slander against you because of me.
Be glad and rejoice, for your reward in heaven is great.

Saints are Beatitude People

As the gospel for celebrating All Saints Day, the beatitudes suggest the many ways Christians through the centuries have embodied these sayings. They challenge us who belong to the communion of saints today to live in ways quite the reverse of profit-motivated values. The first beatitude asks that the saint be poor in spirit. It directs all of us to recognise the experience of the economically poor and to enter into the difficult condition of the poor, their powerlessness to influence social systems that keep them poor. The saint lives the ‘preferential option for the poor,’ one of the principles of Catholic social teaching. The second beatitude calls us to accompany people in tragedy and sorrow, to be their comfort. The third beatitude asks saints to be meek. It promises the whole earth to those with little. This beatitude has caused problems historically in certain types of Christian spirituality. ‘Meek’ has sometimes meant ‘weak’. Meekness in this beatitude actively recognises the injustice in which we can find ourselves, does not deny wrongs, and keeps working to make changes that will contribute to healing. The meek saint is not passive. The fourth beatitude challenges us to act from a deep spiritual realisation that all is not well in the world, not all have enough to survive let alone thrive. The saint that has an appetite for justice knows it demands action. Saints are merciful and will receive mercy, the fifth beatitude promises. The challenge to be pure of heart has caused problems when people interpret it to refer only to sexual issues, such as moral purity, sexual restraint, refraining from impure thoughts and acts, staying away from occasions of sin (movies, books, internet). It becomes the ‘sixth’ beatitude rather than a challenge to see God in our lives, to be single-minded in our intention to act with love toward all neighbours. The sincere of heart live a deep interior life in communion with God. The seventh and eighth beatitudes call blessed not those with big salaries and no worries but those who work for peace and bear persecution. They challenge us to join in the work of bringing the reign of God to Earth. Which beatitude has special significance to you? Why is it significant?

Many blessings for the week

LITURGICAL LIFE OF THE SCHOOL

Thank you to all those families who came along to our Family Mass last Sunday. The parishioners commented on how beautifully the students presented the thanksgiving hymn and on how nice the family hearts look in the church. It was a shame we had some rain, however, that didn’t stop our families from staying for a sausage or cake afterwards.

Upcoming Liturgies and Masses

  • Remembrance Day Liturgy on Wednesday 11th November at 9am in the multi-purpose area.
  • Year 1 Liturgy of the Word on Wednesday 18th November at 9am in the church.

FUNDRAISING

Socktober - totals raised for Catholic Mission

It was great to see a flood of mismatched, striped, coloured, animal print, sport-themed socks for Crazy Sock Day. As a school we raised over $397 from such a simple event. This money will be greatly appreciated by those who really need it.

Mission Australia Safe Haven Program

Don’t forget to bring in your second hand clothes….

Two wheelie bins have been set up outside the office for unwanted, out of size clothing and shoes. These items are then provided at a very low cost of $1, $2 or $3 back to families that are in need of such items. This initiative will be a way of supporting the youth of Mornington Island. Please ensure items are in a condition fit for donation and sale. Donations will be collected until the end of November.

St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal

Our Christmas St Vincent De Paul hamper drive will begin next week. Each class will have a focus family to buy for. For example, a mother, father and two girls aged 6 & 8. Please send along new items that would be appropriate for such a family. These could be gifts or special non-perishable Christmas food and treats. If you have more than one child at Holy Cross, you may choose to donate just to one basket (class). St Vincent De Paul would appreciate even the smallest assistance. For those families unable to contribute, please offer a prayer for families in our local area.

Each child will receive a letter next week, outlining what types of things to bring, as well as which family arrangement to donate for.

Thanking you in anticipation for your continued support.

PRAYER FOCUS FOR THE WEEK:

On November 1st we celebrate the feast of All Saints and on November 2nd, All Souls, we remember all those who have died. The term ‘saint’ comes from the Latin word ‘sanctus’ meaning ‘holy’. At Mass on Sunday, we prayed the Apostle’s creed. It mentions the, “…communion of saints”. This refers to the special relationship existing between all members of the Church. This family of the church includes not only the named saints, but also holy men and women that have gone before us, those who live today and even those not yet born. It includes each of us.

Saints have been honoured because they lived and shared Christ’s message, even though they may have suffered in their own lives, or suffered because of their faith. Their stories give us hope in our lives: they are heroes to many. Now in Heaven, saints are with God, born to eternal life.

Mary MacKillop, or Mary of the Cross, is Australia’s first saint. She was instrumental in providing education for children from poor families. It is interesting to note that one of the little quotes we attribute to Mary MacKillop from 1874, is that, “In working for God we must have little trials”.

We pray that the light of Christ may shine through us….
so that we can make a difference in our world.
Amen.

BUMP UP TO THE NEXT YEAR LEVEL

Next Thursday 12th November, our Year 6 students who are attending a Catholic High School in 2016 will be participating in an Orientation Day at their high school, as part of their transition process.

Our Prep to Year 5 students will also have the opportunity to experience a new year level during our Bump Up Afternoon on the same day. Staffing and classroom allocations have not been decided therefore, Bump Up time will simply be a taster of being at Holy Cross in 2016. It will give students the opportunity to enter their new year level classrooms, make some observations about what is the same and different, ask questions about and quell some anxieties. It is a very exciting time in the school, which we anticipate will lead to many animated conversations at home!

Furthermore, we will have our new Prep students and parents visiting us as part of their Prep Orientation sessions on the 12th November at either 1.30 pm – 2.45 pm or 5.30 pm – 6.45 pm.

French Lessons 2016

Bonjour parents and students of Holy Cross!

It is with SO much excitement that I announce I will be introducing a French language and culture program into Holy Cross from P- 6 in 2016.

I have loved teaching Visual and Media Arts in 2015 and now I have been given the opportunity to share my true passion - learning another language and culture. I am feeling truly blessed.

I understand that many students have had exposure to Italian and a year of Chinese in 2015 and this has been a great ‘taster’ program for their experience.

I was inspired by a passionate primary school French teacher. I still remember eating Cadbury chocolate chunks in sliced bread - the only version of a Pain au Chocolat available in the 80’s. The world has become such a smaller global community since then, with the internet bringing cultures together at the touch of a finger. Learning a language in 2016 is not the rote learning experience it once was. The new Australian Curriculum focuses on learning about differences between cultures. This helps to enhance students’ understanding of their own culture; how language shapes, evolves, and defines us.

Why French?

French plays such a huge part in the English language with roughly 45% of English coming from French origin.

Learning French enhances students’ grammar and vocabulary skills in English.

France is predominantly Catholic. The students will know what Notre Dame means when they visit and they will learn how to pray in French!

France is the most popular tourist destination in the world - so students are most likely to visit one day!

We will all get to eat croissants and pain au chocolat on Bastille Day!

Here’s the Australian Curriculum view:

The place of the French language and culture in Australia and in the world

French is a major world language, spoken as the first language in more than two dozen countries on five continents and as an official language in 33 countries. First language speakers include the 67 million inhabitants of mainland France; those living in the territorial communities of New Caledonia, French Polynesia, and the Wallis and Futuna Islands, as well as in French overseas departments such as French Guiana, Martinique, Guadeloupe and the island of Réunion; 80 percent of the inhabitants of Québec; and significant communities in Luxembourg, Belgium, Monaco, Switzerland and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. There are also many French-based creole languages, such as Haitian, developed through French colonial contact. French is a language of diplomacy, used by many international organisations, and is the dominant working language at the European Court of Justice. French culture has contributed to the shaping of global movements and traditions associated with domains such as the arts, cinema, philosophy and cultural theory, as well as fashion, design, food and wine.

I look forward to working with the students in 2016!

A bientôt! See you soon!

Term 4 Fee Accounts

Term 4 fees are now past due and require your urgent attention. Thank you to the families who have already paid their school account or updated their payment plan. As the end of the school year approaches, parents and carers who have direct debit arrangements in place are asked to re-check the balance on their fee account to ensure that this account will be paid in full by the end of the school year with the current arrangements. If families have not updated their direct debit this year, it is quite possible that there may be a shortfall in the total amount owing. Please check this information that has been emailed, so as to ensure your account will be paid in full. Please be aware that Semester 2 report cards will be withheld if fee accounts remain unpaid and communication regarding genuine financial difficulties or other influencing family circumstances has not been received. For those families returning next year who have direct debits in place, please plan to make a time early in the year to update this information and make adjustments as necessary.

Class Lists

As previously mentioned, class lists will soon be formulated. The process for compiling classes each year is a lengthy one which includes teachers seeking student input to identify a small number of special friends, considering overall student dynamics, taking into account student achievement and work habits and accommodating specific student learning needs and ensuring a gender balance. Parent requested teacher preferences are not considered within this process, and I ask that parents trust the careful judgements which are made during this lengthy process to consider the wide ranging criteria and aims to ensure a well-balanced classroom dynamic that will bring optimum learning outcomes. Any special requests that wish to be included in this process for consideration should be emailed to Margie Thorpe at Mthorpe@cns.catholic.edu.au

2015 Exiting Student Enrolments

Prep -Year 5 Exiting Enrolments – Families who are aware that they are relocating or moving your child to another school should by now have notified the office of your intention to exit. If you have not done so already, please advise the school as soon as possible so that class lists can start to be finalised for our continuing families and make offers to those currently on our waitlists where known vacancies exist.

BEAT CANCER FUNDRAISING TOUR #curecancerwithcahn

Dear Parents and Guardians

My name is Cahn Butler-Channell and I am a Yr 12 student at St Augustine’s College. My primary school days were spent at Holy Cross. I was Vice School Captain when I was in Year 7.

In January, I will be riding in THE BEAT CANCER TEAM at the SANTOS TOUR DOWN UNDER in Adelaide, Australia’s Tour De France! As part of the team I will ride 900km over the week of the tour and be treated as a professional. Being part of this team means I am committed to raising $12 000 for the Cancer Council.

Every one of us knows someone who has experienced the heartache of a cancer diagnosis in their families or some of us have lost loved ones. My grandfather (Gramps) died from spinal cancer and our close family friend Therese died from a brain tumour. I couldn’t do anything to help them but am doing something now, and this money that I raise is for the doctors to allow them to continue their bid to find a cure. Currently we have close family friends fighting this disease.

Will you support me? Will you get behind me and help me raise these funds? I hope so. Simply type, ‘beat cancer team 2016’ into your browser and click on meet the team, then my name will appear in the second row. Watch my progress. Watch my total grow. Please consider a donation. Every donation over $2.00 is tax deductable. You will be issued with a receipt via email.

I spoke at the school assembly last Friday and asked the kids if they would support me by buying a wristband during Week 5, this week. Wristbands are $2.00 and have #curecancerwithcahn on them. The students have permission to wear them all this week.

The team is made up of twenty-two riders from around Australia. There isn’t anyone else from Far North Queensland doing this, so I hope you can get behind me.

Perhaps another way of helping me is to donate to my raffle, any support you can give would be very much appreciated.

This is very exciting and I hope you will be part of my journey.

Thank you so much

Cahn
