From the Acting Principal
Parents,
I have been proud to be part of a great community in 2016, and this was no more visible than in this past week.
At the beginning of last week we were saddened by the sudden passing of Mr Andrew Almond. Andrew is the father of Georgia in 3H and Jasmine in 6H. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with Andrew and with his family, his wife Rose, and their daughters Georgia and Jasmine; his parents, Kath and Alan, his father in law, Peter. Our prayers and thoughts also extend to Andrew's broader family, his brother Anthony, his sister-in law Di, and their two daughters, Casey and Leia. As a member of the St Andrew's College teaching staff, Andrew will be sadly missed by members of both our communities. A beautiful and moving service was held for Andrew on Friday in our Holy Cross Parish Church. Over 700 people were in attendance, a true sign of just some of the lives Andrew touched.
We have received great support from the broader Cairns Diocese community with many wishes, prayers and gestures received over this past week. I thank Catholic Education Services Cairns for their continued support, our fellow Cairns schools and communities for their prayers and all members of the Holy Cross community for banding together in a time of need.
On Saturday the Holy Cross P & F hosted our annual Holy Cross Christmas Fair. Again, another great community event, that from all accounts was a resounding success. For my first experience, it was wonderful to spend the evening wandering around chatting to students, families and other members of the community. I was also able to enjoy a few rides with my own family. From the conversations shared, the highlights were definitely the fireworks and the 'Choco Lotto' stand. Congratulations and thank you to our hard working P & F members lead by Damian Martin-Blakey, Tracey Cook and Tony Sheehan for all your efforts to put this great event together. We look forward to 2016.
It is with pleasure and excitement that we announce the appointment of Mr Ayton Russell as HPE Teacher at Holy Cross in 2016. Ayton has taught PE and in the classroom at a number of schools across Cairns. Ayton will bring to the role a wealth of knowledge as both a personal trainer and PE teacher. He has extensive contacts in the Cairns region with Barron and Peninsula level that will continue to enhance the work that Mrs Paulette Henderson-Croft has done tirelessly in her time. We look forward to welcoming Ayton in 2016. This now completes our teaching staff for 2016. Further information on 2016 teaching teams will be included in the next newsletter.
On Monday we hosted the Department of eSafety Australia. Presentations were held with students from Year 3-6, staff and then parents last night. These informative sessions focused on safety when using the internet and apps. Some of the topics covered were; security, age appropriate materials, gaming, what to do when you think you are in trouble and helpful hints on how to monitor usage for both teachers and parents. If you were unable to access these sessions you can access information at https://www.esafety.gov.au/
End of Year Events
Next Thursday evening, Holy Cross will host a Christmas Concert from 6pm in the Multipurpose Stage area. Students in all classes have been working and practising with Mrs Wight, Mrs Henderson-Crofts and Mrs Weterkemp to be ready to put on a great show next Thursday night. We encourage as many families as possible to attend this community event.
Year 6 Graduation Liturgy will be held on Wednesday 2nd December from 6:30pm in the Holy Cross Parish Church. Teachers and students are busy preparing for this special occasion to farewell our departing Year 6 cohort as they begin the next stage of their schooling journey. Please keep your eyes out for additional information.
It is tradition at Holy Cross to finish our final day of the school year with an End of Year Whole School Mass. This will be held on Friday 4th December from 11:00am-12:00pm in the church. We encourage as many families and carers to attend and help us to celebrate the Eucharist and the year that was 2015. Following this, students will return to class for final farewells. Students will then be dismissed and are asked to be collected at 12:30pm. OHSC will operate on this day for students who are booked in.
Next week we will welcome back Wendy Manners from her absence on Long Service Leave. Wendy's return will be her final two weeks at Holy Cross before she takes up her appointment in Perth. We look forward to celebrating this time with her. I thank Mrs Jacinta Roberts, Ms Jo Neil and Ms Dorothy Cois for their hard work and dedication to our Administration Team during this time.
Thirty Third Week in Ordinary Time – The Lesson
of the Fig Tree
Mark 13: 24-32
From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its
branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is
near.
So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near,
at the very gates.
Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away before all these
things take place.
Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away
Jesus tells his friends about the day he will come back to earth, riding on the clouds. Jesus knew that his friends would miss him when he left and went back to heaven. Do you know anyone who has died and went to heaven? Whom do you miss? What was that person like? Jesus wants his friends to understand that he is the Special One sent by God. When he returns he won't just pull up in a car. He won't be riding a horse or donkey. He'll be riding on the clouds! What would you think if you looked up and saw Jesus coming down from the sky in the middle of the clouds? Would you run and tell someone? Would you just stand there and watch? Would you hide? Would you yell, 'Hi Jesus'? What would you do? How would you feel?

HOLY CROSS REPRESENTS COMMUNITY
It has been wonderful to be a part of our school community over recent weeks for a number of reasons. Communities gather in sadness, in difficult times, in celebration, in prayer, in support, in preparation and in fun. Firstly, we gathered as families at our Parish Family Mass. Following that, there were many ways that our families gathered to support the Almond family on the passing of Andrew. Many, many families spent time setting up, running and packing up our school fair. Many others attended the fair, which raised funds for our school. There was a proud audience watching the choir and musicians at the fair and there will be proud families watching most Holy Cross students on stage at the Christmas concert. The end of year is always a wonderful opportunity for families to come together and share in community spirit. Our end of Year Mass and parish Christmas Masses will be another way families can celebrate together.
LITURGICAL LIFE OF THE SCHOOL
This week we have the last of our class Masses and liturgies, with Year 1 celebrating a Liturgy of the Word on Wednesday. All parents are invited to our end of year Mass on the last day of school: Friday 4th of December, at 11:00am.
Upcoming Liturgies and Masses
- Graduation Mass Year 6 Wednesday 2nd December at 6:30pm
- End of Year Whole School Mass on Friday 4th December at 11:00am
FUNDRAISING
St Vincent De Paul Christmas Appeal
Donations are coming in for classroom baskets, with one Year 4 class already filling theirs! Please remember that any donated items are to be new, not second-hand. Second hand clothes can go in the Mission Australia wheelie bins. Thank you for anything you are able to give.
St Vincent De Paul Christmas Hampers
This year at Holy Cross, instead of filling our trolleys, each class will have a basket that is designated for a family in our Far North region. We ask that families, who are able, donate Christmas food items or gifts for the appropriate family profile. If you have more than once child at school, please choose which class basket to donate to.

RESILIENCE PARENT PROGRAMME
This term is a very busy one for parents, with the fair, new prep orientation sessions, swimming for the P-3 classes and end of year activities. I had planned another parent session from the Michael Grose series this term. If any parents are available for the second Resilience session, it will be held in the library next Tuesday 24th of November, at 1:45pm. If any parents are unable to attend at this time, and would prefer Tuesday the 1st of December, at 6:00pm, please email me. If I don't receive any response, this evening session will not run. I am aware that families have many commitments at this time of year. The third session of the series will take place in Term 1 next year.
REFLECTION AND PRAYER FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
In gratitude to volunteers
Sr Kym Harris osb
Most of us are aware of the extraordinary contribution that volunteers make to our Australian community. Many, many of us do something to build up the community around us. It doesn't take much thought to draw up a wonderful long list of what is done around our school: library support, reading support, gardening working bees, sports coaching… What we see here is the phenomenon of different people bringing out their different talents in differing situations. When this happens strong bonds of community are made. And this runs very deep. This is the way God has made us: to be a community sharing and receiving from each other.
But there is something that builds even deeper bonds between us. It is the expression of gratitude to these volunteers for what they have done. Every now and then we hear of the monetary value of the work of volunteers, 'They have saved the economy x amount of dollars.' That, to me, is an odd way of giving it value. The best way we can give value is to say 'Thank you.' Expressing our gratitude to those who help us and our community releases a peculiar form of love that inspires others to do the same. Expressing our gratitude draws us into the very life of God where the Father, Son and Spirit give and receive from each other in joy. Expressing our gratitude fosters joy both in our community and within us.
Loving God, let me express my thanks and appreciation to the many people who build up my community by their volunteer work. Let their work be guided by your Spirit. I ask this in Jesus' name confident that you will hear us.
Amen.

Semester 2 Report Cards
Semester 2 reports are aimed to be mailed out on Friday 4th December during Week 9 to those families who are financial or have a current payment plan in place. If you have changed address details please notify the school office as soon as possible to ensure delivery.
Library Notice
All library books and home readers MUST be returned by Friday 20 November, 2015 so that a stocktake of library resources can take place.
We are blessed to have an extensive range and variety of children's resources available for borrowing through our Library at Holy Cross. We are doubly blessed to have such an efficient Library Assistant in Luci Whouley, managing our collection and our Teacher Librarian, Larissa McKirdy working with teachers and classes. Our collection ranges from home readers, picture books, novels, fiction and non-fiction books and magazines. Our resources are purchased through our library budget as well as Book Fair and Book Club commissions. We also graciously receive donations.
Unfortunately, each year hundreds of dollars worth of communal resources in the form of library books are accidently misplaced, damaged or lost. In a bid to seek the assistance of all families and students to care of our resources and reduce any loss; the relevant section of the Holy Cross Library Policy, which outlines replacement requirements for overdue library resources is outlined for your information.
Library resource replacement requirements…
- When books are overdue, students receive a friendly reminder to return them.
- If these books remain unreturned, students receive a listing of the items not returned along with a sticker seeking parental assistance to look for and return any missing books.
- If books are more than four weeks overdue, written notification about the missing item is forwarded to parents requesting assistance locating the books while our Library staff also continues a thorough shelf search.
- If after six – eight weeks and an extensive search, both at home and at school, the missing books have not been located, an invoice is sent home requesting the replacement costs to be remitted for lost or damaged resources.
Christmas Cards and Candy Canes
Day for Daniel
Friday 31st October saw our school awash in a sea of red in remembrance of Daniel Morcombe. It is a day set aside to keep the message about personal safety awareness in the minds of both our school and wider community. All of our students participated in our annual community walk after assembly, heading either north towards Johnny Crows or south toward Campus. Child safety is a community effort and we were fortunate enough to have seven police officers join us for assembly and the walk, several of them being Holy Cross parents.
Students completed health lessons during the week, learning about ways to keep safe. Please remind your children of the 3 Rs -
- Recognise - listen to your body cues when you feel unsafe,
- React if you feel scared by
- running away,
- screaming,
- saying no,
- calling for help - Report - tell a trusted adult, which includes parents, teachers, police officers and the Kids Help Link
You may consider downloading the Daniel Morcombe Foundation's Help Me App for your child's phone.
Boom! Year 6 Science at Smithfield High!
Helium balloons exploding! Magnesium flashing! Bunsen burners burning! Sounds like an exciting Science lesson in the Smithfield High Science Labs with Mr Rob Callin, Head of Science!
On 23rd October, our Year 6 students had a productive learning experience at Smithfield High. Students observed and conducted some engaging Science experiments that extended on their class work on Chemical and Physical changes. The children observed the difference between the combustion of air and helium. They practised lighting Bunsen burners to burn Magnesium and observed its chemical change.
We are very appreciative of having the expertise of Rob. He assisted us with the experiment design phase and also led the various experiments for us. This experience also gave our Year 6s the opportunity to experience a little taste of Science at High School while hopefully, igniting a passion for Science.
Donations of Stationery Items to Schools in PNG
Dear Parents and Carers,
We would appreciate any DONATIONS of stationery items, new or used, that can be sent to remote communities of PNG where there are VERY limited educational resources are available and the children are very eager to learn.
If you have any of these items at home not in use, please consider donating them:
- pencils (used or new),
- colouring-in pencils,
- crayons,
- erasers,
- rulers,
- pencil cases,
- exercise pads - new or with some used pages ripped out,
- any storybooks would also be welcomed,
- water bottles,
- lunch boxes with lids,
- sporting equipment
A container will depart later next month with much needed equipment on board.
All items can be left at the School Office.
Smithfield Library Request
Holy Cross students stream in to the Smithfield Library every afternoon and their presence is very much welcomed. The staff try to make their time at the Library enjoyable.
Smithfield Library staff have asked us to remind our students to act appropriately and respectfully when using their facility.
If your children use the Library, we would appreciate reminding them that:
- there are after-school activities they can engage in
- Wednesday Craft,
- Friday LegoMania,
- board games everyday - Library staff are always happy to help with homework queries
- No more than two people allowed at a computer
- No food and drink at the computers
- No playing in the under-cover path leading to the library and the foyer as it can endanger others, especially small children and the elderly. There is a large park adjacent where they are free to play.
Lastly, please be mindful that under Queensland Law, children under the age of 12 should not be left unsupervised. Smithfield Library staff are committed to their duty-of-care and do their best to provide a caring and friendly environment, however, they do not supervise children.

Term 4 Fee Accounts
Term 4 fees are now past due and require your urgent attention. Thank you to the families who have already paid their school account or updated their payment plan. As the end of the school year approaches, parents and carers who have direct debit arrangements in place are asked to re-check the balance on their fee account to ensure that this account will be paid in full by the end of the school year with the current arrangements. If families have not updated their direct debit this year, it is quite possible that there may be a shortfall in the total amount owing. Please check this information that has been emailed, so as to ensure your account will be paid in full. Please be aware that Semester 2 report cards will be withheld if fee accounts remain unpaid and communication regarding genuine financial difficulties or other influencing family circumstances has not been received. For those families returning next year who have direct debits in place, please plan to make a time early in the year to update this information and make adjustments as necessary.
Class Lists
As previously mentioned, class lists will soon be formulated. The process for compiling classes each year is a lengthy one which includes teachers seeking student input to identify a small number of special friends, considering overall student dynamics, taking into account student achievement and work habits and accommodating specific student learning needs and ensuring a gender balance. Parent requested teacher preferences are not considered within this process, and I ask that parents trust the careful judgements which are made during this lengthy process to consider the wide ranging criteria and aims to ensure a well-balanced classroom dynamic that will bring optimum learning outcomes. Any special requests that wish to be included in this process for consideration should be emailed to Margie Thorpe at Mthorpe@cns.catholic.edu.au
2015 Exiting Student Enrolments
Prep -Year 5 Exiting Enrolments – Families who are aware that they are relocating or moving your child to another school should by now have notified the office of your intention to exit. If you have not done so already, please advise the school as soon as possible so that class lists can start to be finalised for our continuing families and make offers to those currently on our waitlists where known vacancies exist.

HOLY CROSS CHRISTMAS FAIR MUSIC CONCERT
We are all exceptionally proud of all our music students who participated in delivering a fantastic performance on Saturday night. It is a huge act of courage and confidence to get up on stage and perform in front of a large audience. We had some shyness, but in the end I think they all did really well. Thank you to our audience members who gave us their support, and encouraged us to keep going.

CONGRATULATIONS!
Congratulations to Jazz (5H) who has again delivered outstanding results in the Cairns Regional Dance Competition in the first week of November. She finished 4th overall with three gold medals!
Please let Mrs Wight know of any people in our community who are achieving in the Arts!
ARTS ALIVE!
This term in the Arts Alive profiles we are focusing on Visual Arts. Visual Arts is a huge area as in encompasses drawing, painting, sculpting, textiles and mixed media art just to name a few. Basically anything that creates a visual image for people to enjoy. This week we have the gifted Mistaya (3S) and Mali (5C) who has been recognised by Holy Cross staff as having a talent for drawing and painting! Please email me, cwight@cns.catholic.edu.au , if you know someone who would like to be interviewed for the school newsletter!

CHOIR UPDATE!
Thank you for all your support in the Christmas Fair performances. The children sang very well and we all had a great time. This was some students' first performance and it was a big one. This is the only time in the year that the choirs are involved in such a long concert. All other performances are much shorter and so the children all did exceptionally well. Congratulations everyone!
The Liturgy Choir will also be involved in the End of Year Mass (Fri 4th Dec).
ARTS GALLERY
During these last few weeks we have photographed and filmed our final performance pieces. Some groups have worked well together and have been able to give me a polished performance. Some groups are still developing their co-operation skills and haven't been able to give me their best performance but have learnt important life-long learning skills in the process. I assess students' knowledge and skills in the Arts, however, the Arts is also a time where students are constantly asked to work with different people in a creative task. With this point in mind, I am often amazed with the human interactive process that enriches students' lives in small and big ways by just participating in the Arts. I have included some photos that, hopefully, will highlight this point.

WEEK 7 SECTOR ASSEMBLY PERFORMANCES – YEAR 1, 5 & 6
On Friday's junior assembly at 8:30am, Year 1 will be performing an ocean soundscape based on the Lonesome Boatman unit we have been studying. On Friday's senior assembly at 11am, Year 5 & 6 will be presenting the finals of the Holy Cross Song Competition that we have been running. We would like to invite all parents and carers to join us in our last assembly performances for the year.

Costume Suggestions
It is time to start thinking about preparing our students for their part in this year's Christmas Concert. Below is a list of suggested costumes that children could wear that would make our dramatic performances look great and help the students connect to the characters they are playing. We try and make the ideas simple, as we know how hard it can be to whip up these costumes at such a busy time of year. We really appreciate any support you can provide!
Thank you!
