Walking the Way of the Cross

Holy Week11

On Tuesday morning, the students from 5H brought the events of Holy Week to life through a heartfelt liturgy involving freezeframes and narration. Each scene, from Palm Sunday to the Resurrection, was depicted with reverence. It was our hope that the liturgy would allow students, staff and families the opportunity to deeply connect with the significance of each event, fostering a profound understanding of this sacred time.

The atmosphere in the multi-purpose area was filled with solemnity and hope as students engaged in prayer, song, and reflection. The words spoken and sung gave everyone an opportunity to retell the events undertaken over the week, and moments of silent prayer provided a space for personal contemplation.

A highlight of the week for many students and staff was the opportunity to visit the Church and pray with the Stations of the Cross. All members of the school community were invited to reflect and view the Stations of the Cross. This visit was not only educational but also a moving spiritual experience, reinforcing the teachings of Holy Week. It was lovely to hear the students’ wonderings and questions as we moved through each station. The students were making connections to prior learning, reflecting on what they could see around them in the Church and were confidently building on each other’s ideas. It was truly a wonderful experience.

Since the earliest centuries of the Church, Christians have made pilgrimages to Jerusalem in order to retrace the steps of Jesus during his suffering, death and resurrection.  Around the fifteenth century, Christians began the practice of prayerfully meditating on the Passion of Christ by reproducing a miniature version of that pilgrimage in what has eventually become known as the Stations of the Cross. Our time at the Church was a beautiful way for our students to prayerfully reflect on the Passion of Christ.  By walking with Jesus, we know that he will lead us into the new life of the Resurrection.

As the school community remembers the events of Holy Week and prepares for the coming of Easter, classes around the school have come together for Buddy Class activities. Working together and learning from each other is a wonderful way for children to expand their insight and grow their understanding of what the time of Lent can mean for us all.

Year 2 and Year 5 Buddy Time

In his 2025 reflection, Pope Francis spoke about Lent as a time of Faith and Hope.

It invites us to open our hearts to God’s grace and journey together.

In journeying, we are all pilgrims in this life; in journeying together, we are called to walk at the side of others and never as lone travellers. It means walking side-by-side without shoving or stepping on others, without envy or hypocrisy, and without letting anyone be left behind or excluded. Pope Francis calls us all to walk in the same direction, tend to the same goal, and be attentive to one another in love and patience. As we head towards the resurrection at Easter, we are called to journey together in Hope”.

As we end this week, I wish all students and their families a Blessed and safe Easter.
