Mother's Day

Mother’s Day is a time to pause, reflect, and express gratitude to the mothers, grandmothers, wives, and mother figures who play such vital roles in our lives.

No matter what our family unit looks like, these women are so often the glue that holds everything together — guiding, nurturing, and loving without expectation of thanks.

Growing up with my sister and our single mum, it’s only now, as I raise a family of my own, that I truly appreciate the countless sacrifices she made. She worked tirelessly to provide for us — making sure we were fed, clothed, supported at school, and ferried to weekend sport. All the while, I imagine she spent many sleepless nights wondering if she was doing enough, even though, to us, she did everything. Now, I see my own wife, mother of my children making these same sacrifices, working tirelessly for our children and I know experiencing the same sleepless nights, wondering, is she doing everything she can to ensure our children have the very best in life.

Each of us holds unique memories and qualities we treasure in our mothers and those who have filled that role in our lives — compassion, strength, understanding, and unconditional love.

Often, but especially this week, our students have had the opportunity to reflect on and talk about the special qualities they admire in their mothers and mother figures. It’s a beautiful reminder of the impact they, you, have on the hearts and lives of the next generation.

For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of May to honour Mary, Mother of God. The custom spans centuries, going back as far as the ancient Greeks. Mary’s journey as a mother, from a crib in Bethlehem to a cross in Jerusalem gives each of us an opportunity for reflection.

Parenting is no easy task. Parenting can be one of the toughest yet most rewarding roles we’ll ever have. Every day, we pour our hearts into our children, doing our best to guide, nurture, and equip them to be the best versions of themselves. It’s a journey filled with challenges, but also immeasurable joy — knowing that our efforts are shaping their future in meaningful ways.

I came across the following article from the amazing Maggie Dent – “The very real challenges of mothering in the 21st Century.” Within you might find some words of wisdom, something you relate with, perhaps a tip to challenge what you are experiencing. Perhaps just an acknowledgement of the many challenges faced for mothers in the world we are trying to navigate as parents.

I truly hope this weekend brings all our mothers the love and appreciation you deserve. May you be spoiled, not just with thoughtful gestures and gifts, but with the genuine affection and gratitude of your children. I hope you feel the depth of their love in every hug, smile, and kind word. You give so much every day, and this is the time to bask in the joy of being recognized and cherished for all you do.

Wishing you a Mother’s Day filled with warmth, laughter, and the special moments that make motherhood such a rewarding journey.
