From the Principal
My time at Holy Cross continues to be that of learning: learning about the Holy Cross culture; learning about the Holy Cross history; learning about the students and staff; and, learning about the hopes and dreams of the parents and members of our wider community. And the more I learn, the more excited, inspired and blessed I feel to have been invited to join this wonderful community.
With the passing of every day I spend at Holy Cross, I observe an action, a gesture, or words uttered that remind me of the presence of God - 'God Moments' - that fleeting second when you know that something greater than ourselves has touched our lives. It's easy to let life pass us by without acknowledging the blessings that God gives to us, and one of the many joys of working with children, is that their innocence, natural curiosity and openness to all things makes them the perfect vehicle to see God in the world, and witness God's love and grace. We are beyond blessed to have a caring, loving God who is constantly at work in our lives.
It was following a particularly enjoyable walk around the school grounds speaking with the students and listening with delight to all the wonderful things they had been doing as part of their Lenten Journey, that led me to reflect upon some words of wisdom shared with myself by a teaching partner many years ago. As it was many years ago when these words were spoken, I cannot recall their exact sequence, but the essence was quite simple: "Every time you experience a God Moment, be sure to share them. When you share these moments with others, the experience not only touches your life, but the many lives who may never have experienced them before. Our experience can offer others hope and reassurance."
So my request this week for our Holy Cross parents and carers is to make a very conscious effort every day to notice how and when God works in your life â in obvious and subtle ways – and to share these moments with others. Take a moment to look into the eyes of your child, listen to their tales, and be open to embracing these positive experiences, because they are the daily proof of God's active involvement in our lives.
I found it a little ironic bearing in mind my ponderings during the week, that my attention should be drawn to a webpage created by The Australian Government entitled, 'What can I do to help my child do well at school?'
https://www.education.gov.au/what-can-i-do-help-my-child-do-well-school
The webpage provides a list of five easy things to help improve your child's learning. Item number three states, 'Talk with your child every day about their day'. It provides a number of tips and ideas about how to achieve this.
I read the tips with interest and thought that each of them could easily lead to a moment of thanks, gratitude and feelings of God's blessings.
I also found it ironic that the next tip is, 'Read with your child', bearing in mind reading forms the backbone of our draft Homework Guidelines. If you haven't yet filled out our Parent Survey, I urge you to do so as Term 2, and the launch of the new guidelines, is fast approaching.
https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/WWCW79N
Do try and find a moment in your busy week to have a look at the website. There are some pearls of wisdom with practical examples of things that can be done to make our child / children's experience at school even more successful.
On a completely different note, it is with great sadness that we farewell Mrs Sandy Klibbe at the end of this week following her appointment as a Teacher Aide at St Augustine's College, Cairns. Sandy has been employed as a School Officer at Holy Cross since 2002, and prior to that was actively involved in the Holy Cross community as a parent. Her contribution to the life, soul and growth of our school has been immense. She will be sorely missed. Please join me in wishing Sandy every happiness and praying for God's gracious blessings as she enters this next phase in her career.
Wishing you God's blessings now and always,

LITURGICAL LIFE OF THE SCHOOL
This week we have the first of our senior classes receiving Reconciliation. This is something that people can do throughout their lives, however, it is very important during this time of Lent: a time we pray, repent and turn back to God. One aspect of this Year of Mercy, is that of forgiveness and God's abundant love and mercy. The motto for the year, Merciful like the Father, serves as an invitation to follow the merciful example of God who asks us not to judge or condemn but to offer love and forgiveness instead.
Upcoming Liturgies and Masses
- 8th March Year 5 Reconciliation
- 9th March Year 5 Class Mass
- 15th March Year 6 Reconciliation

Project Compassion
Please keep putting money in your home and classroom Project Compassion boxes. This week of Project Compassion we are invited to focus on the people of Papua New Guinea. Support from around the world can help to enhance their capacity to build communities of lasting peace. As we read on the Caritas website, when we hear stories of goodness and hope we are all nourished by God's living word calling forth in us compassion and generosity.
Thank you again for all the donations of pancakes and to all the pancake customers. The totals are in and we managed to raise the wonderful total of $386.15! That makes the early morning cooking and jam spreading worthwhile!

PRAYER FOCUS FOR THE WEEK
This reflection is taken from www.gpbs.com.au .
"The story of the fig tree, is really a lesson about people. The gardener wanted to give the fig tree a second chance to do the right thing: make figs. People who have done wrong often need a second chance. When we have mercy on people, when we don't treat them as badly as we think they deserve, we give them a second chance.
Has anyone ever given you a second chance?
Does anyone show mercy to others all the time? No. All of us have times when we try to get back at someone who has done wrong to us. But God has mercy on us. God doesn't give us the punishment we deserve. God is sad when we do wrong, but doesn't try to get back at us. Instead, God has mercy on us. That's why God sent Jesus to die for us. Now we can be free from our sins, and we can show mercy to others each and every day."
Dear God,
I'm sorry for the times when I have tried to get back at
someone for doing wrong.
Thank you for having mercy on me by sending Jesus to forgive me.
Help me to have mercy on others.
Amen.

Holy Cross - Positive Behaviour School
In 2015, Holy Cross began reviewing behaviour management and our approaches used. Throughout the year the Holy Cross community was asked to participate in a survey to help determine the values and morals that as a Holy Cross community we all desire to see in our children. Your responses, along with those of the staff and students, were invaluable in determining the direction and focus we took. In a nutshell, as a Holy Cross community it was clear that we all desire; high expectations delivered in a clear, fair and consistent way that supports our students to grow to become successful people.
The underlying theme of School Wide Positive Behaviour or SWPB is teaching behavioural expectations in the same manner as any core curriculum subject. Typically, a team of teachers and administrators would drive this process in a school. The school focuses on three to five behavioural expectations that are positively stated and easy to remember. In other words, rather than telling students what not to do, the school will focus on the preferred behaviours. Here at Holy Cross our expectations are focused around:
Respect Yourself, Respect
Others, and Respect Property
Safety First
Right Place Right Time!
Consistency from class to class and adult to adult is very important for successful implementation of SWPB. The team create a matrix of what the behavioural expectations look like, sound like, and feel like in all the non-classroom areas. At Holy Cross this matrix is our 'Positive Behaviour Matrix' developed in Semester One 2015, which, by now, all children are becoming familiar with. A copy of this matrix is included in this week's newsletter for you to review. The language is purposely positive as well as in child language as this matrix is now a regular teaching tool in the classroom. We would hope that many of these expectations would not be dissimilar to those at home and therefore, reinforcement from home is a key component of our success.
Another primary activity for the SWPB team is determining how the behavioural expectations and routines will be taught in and around the school. Teachers utilise and create lessons for teaching respect, responsibility etc. Many schools choose to use several days at the beginning of each year to take the students through these expectations, as they establish routines and practices for the new year. For example, students may be brought to the church and the children will practise lining up, entering the church, sitting and kneeling on the pews, being reverent and exiting the church appropriately.
On Monday Morning Prayer we introduce students to our weekly focus for Positive Behaviour. These focuses come from the Holy Cross 'Positive Behaviour Matrix'. We aim to include our focus in newsletters and have visuals in key areas of the school so parents can support this focus and reinforce at home as well. Teachers endeavour to find moments in the week to practise and role play scenarios to help reinforce the focus with students. As positive behaviour is about praise for students displaying correct behaviour, we will also be focusing our efforts on rewarding students who are demonstrating the weekly focus, as well as other aspects of the 'Positive Behaviour Matrix'. Whole school rewards include our weekly Holy Cross Hero draws, the Holy Cross Hero Class award, and Hero Time Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for the focus.
In Semester Two, the SWPB team began to fine tune the discipline referral process. The team decided what behaviours warrant a trip to the office, and what behaviours are taken care of in the classroom or by the teacher on duty. You may have heard your child speaking about green or yellow levelled behaviours. The success of SWPB is focused on teaching positive behaviours and rewarding students as much as possible for demonstrating the expectations. SWPB works on a 20:1 ratio; twenty positive affirming statements to each reminder of a correct behaviour. With this approach the focus remains on the expectations desired by all with the necessary reminders delivered when required. A further key component is parent contact. Teachers will be asked to be in regular contact for both positive reports and reminders to ensure home and school are working together. Student diaries and reflection sheets are a common way of communicating green or yellow levelled behaviour. For behaviour beyond this you could expect to be phoned or requested for an interview.
Throughout coming newsletters we will continue to unpack the journey we are on and share with you the points we have reached. A Positive Behaviour Renewal is ultimately about changing approaches and shifting culture, therefore the journey is a continuous road ahead. As at any time, I invite you to come and have a conversation with your classroom teacher or myself if you have any questions.
The Good Guys Super Kid Awards
What are 'The Good Guys Super Kid Awards'? Every day children around Australia are showing super hero qualities like courage, bravery, perseverance, determination, compassion and kindness in their daily life. In this spirit, The Good Guys Super Kid Awards program recognises children aged 6 to 12 who have demonstrated their inner super hero strengths and capabilities in everyday life, and honours children whose super hero qualities have allowed them to make a difference in society by doing good. The awards also recognise primary schools that have implemented programs that improve the wellbeing of children.
The winners of the two Super Kid Award categories will each receive $10,000 to support their educational growth and development, while the winner of the Super School Award category will receive $10,000 to further develop their program. Samsung tablets will also be awarded to 100 finalists in each of the two Super Kid Award categories.
The Good Guys really encourages you to consider nominating your school for the Super School Award and letting your staff and parents know about the awards so they can nominate a child for a Super Kid Award.
How to nominate:
Nominating is super simple. Just complete the quick nomination form on the website www.superheroacademy.net.au between Monday 15 February and Sunday 13 March 2016. Here you'll also find some more details about the awards as well as the nomination terms and conditions.
Parent Teacher Interviews
Parent Teacher Interviews will take place at Holy Cross in Week 8 (March 14th -18th). This year Holy Cross will again use the Parent Teacher Online booking system or PTO. You should have received an email from Parent Teacher Online explaining what you need to do this week. Please contact the front office if you have any difficulties or have not received this notification. We encourage you to make the most of this opportunity with your child's teacher and make contact if you have not already booked a time. These meetings will assist greatly to ensure a smooth and productive year for all students and families.

Proposed Sports Shirts – What do you think?
The following samples are shirts being considered for our new House sports shirt. The samples are made of new lightweight, breathable fabric with cotton underlay that is non-pillable, easy to wash and quick to dry. We will be putting the shirts through a 'wear and tear' test with some students. These sun smart shirts have a buttoned v-neck and collar. The house name would be vertically printed on the back down the left, similar to the school uniform shirt design. The manufacturer would be Australian Spirit and distributor would be Lowes, therefore, the sizing and cost ($34.99) would be the same as the uniform shirts. If house sports shirts became part of our uniform, they would be phased in.
Some of the samples will be on display in the Front Office.

Design with logo at bottom of the shirt
We value your feedback on the samples to assist with future planning. This quick seven question survey asks for your feedback on the need, design, fabric and days to be worn. We'd love to hear your thoughts. The results will be shared with the P&F and published in the next newsletter.

Student Absences
When students are absent from school it is a requirement that parents contact the school to communicate the reason for absence either via email to: secretary.trinitypk@cns.catholic.edu.au , by phone 4057 6920 (message may be left if after hours) or via the Skoolbag App. It is important that this information is received early on the day of absence so that students who are not at school can be accounted for.
If after the class rolls have been marked and the school has not been informed of a student absence, the child's main contact will be alerted via text message and be prompted to contact the school to explain the absence.
Absences longer than ten days must be submitted formally in writing to our Principal, Sarah Hamilton, prior to students leaving. The information will be passed onto your child's teacher.
Late Arrival
The bell to start class rings at 8.25 a.m. Students should arrive at school from 8.10 a.m. so that they are adequately prepared to commence learning at 8.30 a.m.
Late arrival for all students is processed through the school office. Students arriving late to school are required to come to the office with an adult who is to sign them in, giving the reason for the late arrival. A late pass will be issued to students for presentation to their classroom teacher.
Early Departure
We understand that specialist and medical appointments sometimes cannot be made outside of school hours. If a student is required to leave school during the day, a listed adult contact must present at the school office to sign the child out. The office staff will then telephone the classroom and request that the child come to the office with their belongings ready for collection. For legal and safety reasons, adults not listed as an emergency contact do not have authority to collect students. In the event of an unlisted adult needing to collect your child, written notification is required from the parent/carer clearly stating the adult's name, and the presentation of photo ID to office staff upon collection. It is important to ensure that your emergency contacts are current.

MATCH REPORT RUGBY LEAGUE – Round 2
Round 2 of the Development Cup saw the Holy Cross team continue to improve and secure a win. The boys played with a smile on their face that showed in the way they performed. Kyden continued his fine form with opening the scoring followed by some smart play by Rian from dummy half who scooted over in the corner. But impressive as the attack was, it was our defence lead by the 'Axe' Michael L-C and Lewis 'Cement' M that provided the team with its backbone. William and Joe were busy all game doing the 1%er's and both deserved their 4 pointers. Thomas and Lachlan M again were busy in both attack and defence with Leon P and Riley S having some fine touches. Jaxon, Michael H and Seth showed some fancy footwork and got the team going forward. The team was captained on the day by Rhys Mc who led by example. Lachie P finished the game with a well deserved try and was smart in directing the team around the park. James 'Fish' W picked up the Man of the Match award with some strong charges up the middle and try-saving tackles, well done, boys! The boys started the game with a smile on their face and the smiles were still there at the end of the game.
Well done on a great team effort.

Man of the Match Round 2 James W
MATCH REPORT RUGBY LEAGUE - Round 3
Holy Cross tasted their first defeat from a very well drilled Gordonvale State Primary School side. The game started trading set for set and the boys working hard in defence. Michael LC led the boys onto the field and pulled off some great tackles. The boys in the middle were running into brick walls but always kept their legs moving. With the Gordy boys opening the scoring, William D came to play and hit back with a solo try, stretching out to put it over the line.
The game turned into arm wrestle and the Gordy boys having to work hard to find their way through the green wall. Kyden made a break down the side line and just out paced the covering defence. James W pulled off some great tackles and our little men kept nipping at their heels. Christian N experienced his first game of rugby league and ripped straight in with a great tackle and showing great feet in attack.
It was a great team effort again with an appreciation of knowing we were beaten by a better side on the day but with a few light bulbs turning on, for how they can be smarter next time.
Great effort lads, looking forward to next week. Man of the Match was well deserved, he was dangerous in attack along with working hard in defence; well done William D.

Trinity Beach Bulldogs Netball Club
Trinity Beach Bulldogs is a new netball club, affiliated with Centrals Trinity Beach Bulldogs Football. We are catering for juniors from 10 and Unders through to Seniors, with trainings at Trinity Beach and matches in at the Cairns Netball courts, Martyn Street, Cairns. Bulldogs are a club within Cairns Netball Association; which is the strongest association in FNQ and therefore the best pathway for young netball players to progress through.
With trainings in Trinity Beach, at least half of the travel requirement is reduced to facilitate participation in netball from those local to Cairns' Northern beaches.
Cairns Netball already have a relationship with your school, with the Net Set Go program run at your courts on Thursday afternoons. Bulldogs Netball is not in competition with this. Bulldogs Netball is more for those children that would like to progress to match play in the junior fixtures on Tuesday nights; however will also have teams and coaches in Cairns Netball's Saturday morning Net Set Go and Netta programs.
