"What I can do, you cannot.
What you can do, I cannot.
But together we can do something beautiful for God."
Mother Teresa

From the Principal

Parents,

Welcome back to Term 3!

Last week we welcomed three new faces to our teaching team here at Holy Cross who will be with us for the remainder of the year. Mrs Marissa Savaglio was welcomed to our 1H class now that Mrs Robb has commenced Long Service Leave, and we welcomed back Mrs Tara Belhumeur who will share teach with Mrs Fiona Duffy in 4C while Mrs Kelly is on leave.

I am sure you will agree that our interschool sports carnival which took place at the closure of Term 2 was a wonderful day! It was so lovely to personally catch up with so many parents over the course of the day and I can assure parents that all staff were extremely proud of our students, who took part in the day with a wonderful sense of team spirit and active participation. While I especially congratulate our staff for their collective efforts in making the day a success, I am particularly grateful and acknowledge the dedicated work of Mrs Henderson Crofts and Mrs Jo Neil who were busy leading up to the day taking care of the finer organisational aspects to ensure the day went smoothly. Congratulations Dillon as overall carnival champions and for their efforts to also take out the team spirit award for the day.

Our teachers were busy on Thursday taking part in the Diocesan Consistency of Judgement Day (CTJ Day) which allowed them to gather with colleagues from around the Diocese to critique and discuss marking judgements in English areas of Reading and Writing. Teachers also spent time working on aspects of Visible Learning which is a Diocesan and School focus this year. The day is a wonderful opportunity for teachers to gather as professionals to not only compare but to be affirmed for the wonderful work that they do in our schools across the Diocese.

Term 3 is set to be a busy one, with our Wonders of Living Programme and Confirmation taking place this week, Catholic Education Week taking place next week and Visiting Japanese Groups and Camps planned for August. Our annual Holy Cross Day celebrations and initial staffing and budget processes for the 2016 school year will commence in early September.

With these chilly mornings at the moment, a reminder that all students should be wearing correct school uniform. Three options are available for cooler weather:- the red jacket which is available at Lowes Smithfield or either a bottle green zippered or pullover jumper which are also available from Lowes or Kmart. Students from Prep to Year 6 should all be wearing correct uniform and shoes that are plain black with no trimmings please.

…and Jesus Said, "Chill Out!"

For several years a religious community invited neighbours to join them monthly for an hour of quiet meditation and prayer in their small chapel. The congregation usually included fifteen to fifty young people from a school. Over pizza after the prayer, the young people would often tell how much the meditation helped relieve the stress caused by school, sports, friends and family. So it was pleasing that they escaped for an hour with the community.

That's what Jesus wanted for his disciples in this last week's Gospel. They've just come back from doing his work. They could keep working; there were plenty of people who needed help. But Jesus says, "Come away … and rest."

In other words, take time to chill out. Authentic discipleship requires downtime for prayer, laughs, naps and talk about life.

As society seems to get busier and busier, we seem to have more responsibilities and less time to relax. But life gets more complicated, more painful, less rewarding and less Christian when it gets too busy. Overworked people pray less, which means they lose God's guidance. Overworked people lose their patience more quickly, which makes it easy to snap at friends or family and difficult to forgive. Overworked people think less thoroughly and listen less often, which makes it easy to make bad decisions.

So make sure you get away. Life is about building relationships, not completing tasks. Given the pressure in our society to stay busy, you might even have to schedule downtime. Then take it. God wants it for you. Take time with friends. Laugh. Hang out. Take naps. Build in ten-minute "rest stops" with God, when you just close your eyes and imagine Jesus wrapping his arms around you. You'll find life more rewarding and Christian living more doable.

In other words, take some time to just chill out

We are all shepherds of those who come under our care. Look upon those in need of your care with the loving eyes of Jesus…

Enjoy your week.

Blessings

CATHOLIC EDUCATION WEEK

Catholic Education Week will be celebrated across Queensland from 26 July - 1 August this year.

This annual event is held to promote the special ethos of Catholic schools and to highlight the great things that take place in Catholic schools every day.

The theme for this year's celebrations is: Engaging Minds. Igniting Hearts. Serving Others.

Catholic education strives to make a difference in the lives of those in our schools and in the wider community by challenging young people to live out the message of Jesus and to reach their full potential as compassionate, contributing, life-giving members of society.

During Catholic Education Week 2015, Catholic education communities across Queensland are invited to celebrate and share how they are Engaging Minds. Igniting Hearts. Serving Others.

There are 299 Catholic schools in Queensland that educate around 147,000 students and employ almost 18,000 teachers and staff, and most will celebrate Catholic Education Week in some way.

Our school is planning a number of activities during the week and we hope you are able to join in the celebrations with us. One of these is Mass on Friday 31 July.

APA News

Welcome back to Term 3! We have certainly hit the ground running this week with students and staff returning to routines well. Once again we have another busy term ahead with a number of key dates to consider.

On Monday morning prayer I introduced students to our weekly focus for Positive Behaviour. Beginning this term we will introduce a weekly focus for students to be considering and teachers to be finding opportunities to teach. These focuses will come from the Holy Cross 'Positive Behaviour Matrix'. I aim to include our focus in newsletters and have visuals in key areas of the school so parents can support this focus and reinforce at home as well. As positive behaviour is about praise for students displaying correct behaviour we will also be focusing our efforts on rewarding students who are demonstrating the weekly focus, as well as other aspects of the 'Positive Behaviour Matrix'. Keep your eyes peeled for the focus.

POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOCUS

Week 1 – Walking on pathways and greeting others

Week 2 – Have a problem, try to solve it, or get help

It is important for children to recognise a problem and first attempt to solve it themselves.

This is an important life skill that also helps to build resilience.

A problem can be social, organisation, academic etc.

Equally important is recognising when to get help

Brainwaves Education Academicus Holiday Program - JCU

Brainwaves Program Feedback (A parent's perspective)

"I didn't want to the day to stop" were the first comments from our 10 year old son when we quizzed him about his first day at University.

Our Year 5 son from Holy Cross School, Trinity Park, was fortunate to attend two of the BRAINWAYS Education programs offered at the James Cook University during the recent school holidays.

We initially received a letter of offer from the school with details of a variety of 3 hour sessions being held at JCU, Smithfield.

Together we read the blurb on each subject and our son showed great interest in the BRAINWAYS Educational Cairns Academicus Science Through the Eyes of a Surfer program and the Mathematics: An Introduction to the Mathematics of Coding program.

We were able to register him online for both sessions and he was very excited he was going to experience his first day at university!

The day arrived, and although feeling a little apprehensive as it was a new experience for him, he was quickly reassured and comfortable as he was surrounded with some familiar faces from his school. His sessions were split in two parts-so we left him at the Uni from 9am to 3pm.

He came home from the sessions raving about his day! He reports both programs were filled with interesting facts and experiments. He described the experiments in detail and we could see he had understood the concepts and enjoyed his time. He spent the days ahead formulating codes for us to decode. He was literally buzzing with excitement and enthusiasm with all his newly learned facts and formulas and was very eager to show off his newly gained skills. It is very rewarding to see his eagerness in learning new skills!

We are so pleased he was given this opportunity and we are pretty confident to say he would participate in more sessions should they be offered his way again. Thank you to the staff at Holy Cross School for offering this opportunity and extending his learning environment.

2015 Peter McGaughey Good Spirit Trophy

Peter McGaughey was a teacher at Holy Cross and died in 1992. In his honour, the staff at the time created this very, very special award to be awarded to a student who exudes that whole "Good Sport" aura. They do not have to be athletic but they get involved. They do their best. They support, not just their group of friends, but also members of their own sport's team, as well as other students and staff. They are an 'ALL ROUND GOOD SPORT'. This recipient is generally a senior student who has consistently demonstrated this all round sportsmanship. They are nominated and voted on by all staff members.

This year, the Holy Cross staff have voted Ruby H. (6S) to be 2015 recipient of the Peter McGaughey Good Spirit Trophy. Ruby shows empathy and kindness towards others. She encourages all team members. Ruby boosted the Petersen team spirit by dedicating their war cries to Jaimee Atkins (2014 Petersen leader; at this time of great sorrow with the passing of Jaimee's mum).

2015 Fr McSweeny Indigenous Spirit Award

Fr Miah McSweeny was Parish Priest at Holy Cross from 1993 to 2005. He died on 10th May 2014. During the 60 years following his ordination, Fr McSweeny was Parish Priest in the Torres Strait, Weipa and Cooktown for combined period of 20 years, serving and working alongside Indigenous Australians. Last year we began a tradition in his honour; an award for one of our Indigenous students, who show the school community that they are proud of their indigenous heritage, are committed to their education and show leadership by example.

The 2015 recipient of the Fr McSweeny Indigenous Spirit Award was selected by our Indigenous Liaison Officer, Breanna Lyall. This student identifies as both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and was chosen because she demonstrates a strong cultural identity by being confident and is proud of who she is. She actively helped with the NAIDOC celebration preparations. The 2015 recipient of the Fr McSweeny Indigenous Spirit Cup is Serina K. (5H)

Year 6 Federation Day

Year 6 had a re-enactment of life in the 1900's. Students from Holy Cross became farmers, bushrangers, chimney sweeps, maids and school boys and girls, even Edmund Barton made an appearance! We had to sing "God Save The King", because at this time there was a King of England and Australians still used the British National Anthem.

Seven students performed their ballads that had been assessment pieces earlier this term. We played old fashioned games like hopscotch, tug o' war, quoits, hoola hoop racing, Peanut Butter, Marmalade Jam Skipping game, elastics and marbles. We all enjoyed the games, I really liked the Tug O' War. Twenty students all joined in.

We took an old style photo where we all had to sit or stand perfectly still and we weren't allowed to smile.

We shared an old fashioned morning tea. We had apple turnovers, lamingtons, croissants, toffee, cupcakes and a sponge cake.

Federation Day was special because we all got to dress up, listen to ballads and play games that kids played back over 100 years ago.

St Vincent de Paul Society Conference Activities Update 2014-2015

On behalf of the Vincentians of our Holy Cross Conference and those we assist I sincerely thank the people of the Northern Beaches Parish, Holy Cross School and St. Andrews College for your generous contribution to the work we do in the parish assisting those less fortunate than ourselves. Although we do receive some government funding which goes towards putting food on the table for people, it is the monthly collections, Christmas Hamper Appeals and class fund raisers that go towards paying rent for someone who has not received any income for weeks, registration of a vehicle so a person on low income can get to work, or purchasing a special chair for a person with limited mobility and who's only comfortable chair had collapsed.

The 92 Christmas Hampers and gifts valued at approximately $6,325 were very much appreciated our many clients who cannot afford the additional cost of Christmas. This year we were able to send 8 hampers to the Gulf Savannah Conference for them to distribute to people on properties who were suffering financial hardship due to the drought.

Our assistance to date this year has included 425 visits to people in their homes assisting 1129 people half of these being children under the age of 16yrs. This has meant a total 642 hours of Vincentians time dedicated to visitations, advice and assistance, companionship, home help and transport to medical facilities or shops. The number of visits has increased by 100 in the last 12mths. and the duration of visits has almost doubled due to the complexity of assistance needed.

Our total financial assistance to those in need for the year was $34,032.60 of which $20,568.60 was in the form of both vouchers for the purchase of food, medical expenses, electricity, rent etc the remainder was in-kind assistance in the form clothing, household goods, food and furniture.

As a conference we meet on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of the month in the Holy Cross School staff room. Anyone interested in joining our work, which is very rewarding, is most welcome to come to a meeting or talk to one of our members to find out more about us. Our current membership is as follows. Fr Neil, Barb Anderson, Clare Johnston, Colleen Holliday, Dennis Innes, Gwagi Mc Dermott, Helen Stone, Linda Prideaux, Maria Gailey, Margaret Barlow, Gary Spencer, Val Driscoll, Peter Cash, Jeannette Sintome, Anne Jackson, Sr Therese Masterson (Spiritual Advisor) Lydia Farrelly, Grace Hope-Simpson, Kylie Pursehouse.
